Review: Paladin's Grace by T. Kingfisher
From the publisher:
Stephen's god died on the longest day of the year....
Three years later, Stephen is a broken paladin, living only for the chance to be useful before he dies. But all that changes when he encounters a fugitive named Grace in an alley and witnesses an assassination attempt gone wrong. Now the pair must navigate a web of treachery, beset on all sides by spies and poisoners, while a cryptic killer stalks one step behind....
I have been a huge fan of T. Kingfisher since I picked up Nettle & Bone and just about peed myself laughing over the banter. She is absolutely the master of banter between characters and Paladin's Grace is no exception!
The story starts off with the death of the God of Steel. No one knew a god could die and his berserker paladins all went mad (some temporarily) or died. They are down to eight of their number and were taken in by the Rat God's disciples. Bishop Beartongue treats them with respect and dignity and through her leadership, they have found purpose and are slowly starting to heal. And then all hell breaks loose with someone beheading citizens of the city; a foiled assassination attempt that puts Stephen and his crush, Grace, into the center of a new plot; and creepy smooth faced men. In true T. Kingfisher style, the entire book is hilarious while also being heartwarming, mysterious, and kinda creepy.
The banter, the awkwardness of the middle aged characters and the little bit of spice that was unexpectedly thrown in made this yet another five star read from T. Kingfisher.
