Spooky Season Reads (that aren't scary): Part One

It’s October and everyone I follow is ready horror books and thrillers because it’s Spooky Season. I want to jump on the trend, but I haven’t really liked the scary things since I outgrew Fear Street, so I decided to make a list of books I’ve loved or want to read that feature spooky creatures that aren’t particularly scary.

All of the books listed below feature ghosts in some way—whether it be a character is a ghost or a character hunts them.

Strange the Dreamer / Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor - One of my absolute favorite fantasy duologies. In the first book, Minya is a supporting character who can control ghosts. Muse of Nightmares has a ghost as a main character and Minya plays a larger role.

Sin & Chocolate by K.F. Breene - The Demigods of San Francisco series is a six book adult urban fantasy romance series that follows Alexis who interacts with ghosts in the hopes of helping them move on.

Ghost Wood Song by Erica Rivers - Shady can call spirits from the grave using music. When her brother is accused of murder, she has to use her power to prove his innocence.

Masters of Death by Olivie Blake - Thomas Edward Parker IV is our poltergeist catalyst who brings the absolutely ridiculous team together in trying to save Death. It’s an urban fantasy that I would liken to Oceans Eleven meets Good Omens.

Belladonna by Adalyn Grace - Signa talks to her mother’s spirit in order to solve her murder.

Anna Dressed in Blood / Girl of Nightmares by Kendare Blake - Urban fantasy about a ghost hunter who befriends a vengeful spirit.

The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston - A ghostwriter can see ghosts and may have just fallen in love with one.
